Blue Peter was NOT, repeat NOT named after the television programme contrary to popular belief. It was in service long before the programme was even thought of and was named in accordance with LNER naming policy after a racehorse, in this case the 1939 Derby winner.

The program sort of adopted the loco when in 1971 they held a naming ceremony which was repeated yet again in December 1991.

I seem to remember one program, and untill quite recently did think the engine was named after the programe. Thank you for your reply.

It's something that the BBC were aware of but I suppose for obvious reasons didn't make much effort to correct it.
