TGOJ MA Class electric freight locomotive MA965

Against a threatening sky, this Trafikaktiebolaget Grängesberg-Oxelösunds Järnvägar locomotive waits on sunday afternoon, 2 March 2008 for its next task. It bears the name "Lyran" (The Lyre), a strange name for a very powerful locomotive!
The MA Co-Co Class were built by ASEA between 1953 and 1960, and 9 of them were bought by TGOJ. They are 16.8 m over buffers and have 1.3 m wheels. The motors produce 3,960 kW and are permitted a top speed of 105 km/h.The starting power is 325 kN, and they weigh 105 tonnes.
The TGOJ locomotives differ from the similar Class used by SJ (Statens Järnvägar - Swedish State Railways) by their capability of being run in multiples. Many of the 32 MA Class locomotives built for SJ were transferred to TGOJ after they were replaced in SJ by the Rc Class.
