This, English Electric 2, 000 hp Type 4 built as D326 was by far the unluckiest diesel locomotive ever to serve BR. In four separate accidents and incidents it was involved in the deaths or injuries to 55 people.
On Boxing Day 1962 it was hauling 'The Mid-Day Scot' from Glasgow to London Euston when at Coppenhall Junction it crashed into a preceding express train which was stationary at signals. 18 passengers were killed and 33 injured.
Next, on August 8, 1963 this was the locomotive heading the train involved in the Great Train Robbery at Sears Crossing, when driver Jack Mills stopped it at a false red signal. He was coshed and later died, possibly as a result.
In 1964 at Crewe a secondman is believed to have opened the upper nose doors to clean the windscreen and was electrocuted by the overhead line.
Later that year it suffered a brake failure and ran away at Monument Lane, Birmingham, heading towards Birmingham New Street station. An alert signalman switched the points to the runaway locomotive was turned on to a line occupied by a goods train. It smashed into the guards vanat that train's rear and severely injured the guard.
In February 1984, having been renumbered 40126, it was withdrawn and sent to Crewe Works for cutting up, which took place within 2 weeks.
